    Timothy Brown

    Timothy Charles Brown is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University and recent Chair of International Studies at Sierra Nevada College.

    Brown's writings focus on revolutions and guerrilla wars and peace processes, Latin America, ethnic conflicts, national security, and international trade, especially between the United States and Latin America.

    During a 1965 to 1992 diplomatic career, he served as senior liaison to the Nicaraguan Democratic Resistance (the Contras) in Central America from 1987 to 1990 and to the United Nations Cease Fire Observation Force there from 1989 to 1990. Some of his other diplomatic positions have included deputy coordinator for Cuban affairs in the Department of State from 1981 to 1983; NATO economic advisor from 1980 to 1983. From 1965 to 1978 Brown served as a diplomat in Israel, Spain, Vietnam, Mexico, Paraguay, El Salvador, The Netherlands and France.

    As a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1964, Brown was a Thai interpreter and Southeast Asia analyst, performed missions in Guatemala, the Philippines, Taiwan.

    Brown is the author of Causes of Continuing Conflict in Nicaragua (Hoover Institution Press, 1995), When the AK-47s Fall Silent—Revolutionaries, Guerrillas, and the Dangers of Peace (Hoover Institution Press, 2000), and The Real Contra War—Highlander Peasant Resistance in Nicaragua (University of Oklahoma Press, 2001).
